Shimmer is used to transform or "transmute" one item into another item. The music that plays is "Aether" and the background can be replicated using the Aether Monolith. In an Aether, the area gets dimmer and stars appear in the background. Upon placing 300 or more tiles of Shimmer in the Underground or Cavern layers, an Aether biome is created. Throwing coins into Shimmer increases the player's Coin Luck, of which the strength and duration of will be determined by the value of the coin and the amount thrown.

This can't be bypassed if wearing the Chromatic Cloak but it allows the player to move horizontally freely while in the shimmer. This will continue until the player reaches an opening that is at least 3 blocks tall. Shimmer cannot be fished in attempting to do so will inflict the Shimmering debuff, which will pull the player downwards into blocks. It has a variety of effects on different items and NPCs, triggered through contact.

The Bottomless Shimmer Bucket can also pour endless amounts of shimmer, which can be obtained after defeating the Moon Lord by either submerging a Bottomless Water Bucket into it, or crafting one using a Bottomless Water Bucket and 10 Luminite Bars at an Ancient Manipulator. It cannot be picked up with Buckets, but it can be pumped. The Terraria DLC tModLoader adds the April Fools Joke item, which appears to be a Terrarian but inflicts a number of novelty debuffs upon use.Shimmer is a shiny, pearlescent liquid found in the Aether Biome. The usual Legendary modifier applies a speed bonus that cannot be applied to yoyos, so a special Legendary modifier had to be coded that would be applicable only to the Terrarian. The Terrarian-exclusive Legendary modifier has the internal ID 84 ( Legendary2), whereas the Legendary modifier for all other weapons has the ID 81 ( Legendary). It is the only yoyo that shoots projectiles. The Terrarian has the longest reach, highest knockback, and highest base critical strike chance of any yoyo. However, despite this, it usually has a higher DPS than the Meowmere because of the homing projectiles and the effect of the Yoyo Bag. The Terrarian alongside the Zenith has the second-highest base damage of any melee weapon in the game, falling behind the Meowmere by 10 base damage.Fittingly with being dropped by the Moon Lord, it appears to be made from Luminite, based on its hue.Since the release of 1.4.0.1 in May 2020, the Terrarian can be reforged to a Legendary Terrarian in-game as well. In November 2015, the original " Terrarian" came out, and then, in June 2019, a related yoyo called " Legendary Terrarian" was released by One Drop Yoyos. The Terrarian is available in reality from One Drop YoYos.Using a Yoyo Bag or Yoyo Glove does not improve the damage output against a single target, because a single normal Terrarian is already capable of hitting a target 6 times a second. In other words, the Terrarian is only capable of damaging a single target 6 times a second at most. On every registered hit, immunity frames that lasts for 1/6th of a second will be gained by the target. Single-target DPS of the Terrarian is limited by penetrating weapon immunity frames.
